Eyewitness Testimony about Jesus the Christ

eyewitness testimony

Eyewitness testimony is a powerful piece of evidence and The Gospels (in the New Testament) contain this type of evidence about the life of Jesus.

Imagine you are a juror in a courtroom, hearing the testimony of eyewitness reports regarding the person, actions, claims and life of Jesus.  What kind of person will emerge from these various accounts?

Below are verses from The Gospels that describe eyewitness accounts of Jesus:

  • The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?  Even the winds and the waves obey him.” – Matthew 8:27
  • The crowd was amazed an said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”  But the Pharisees said, “It’s by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.” – Matthew 9:34
  • Where did this man get his wisdom and these miraculous powers?”  they asked.  “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?  Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, John, Simon and Judas?  Aren’t all his sisters with us? – Matthew 13:54
  • The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing.  And they praised the God of Israel – Matthew 15:31
  • The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee – Matthew 21:11
  • Teacher, they said, “We know that you are  a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. – Matthew 22:16
  • When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teachings – Matthew 22:33
  • No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions – Matthew 22:46
  • The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God…Then he high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy!  Why do we need any more witnesses? …”He is worthy of death they answered– Matthew 26:63 – 67
  • While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s sear, his wife sent him this message, “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man – Matthew 27:19
  • What shall I do, then with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked.  They all answered, “Crucify him!”
  • When the centurion and those with him were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” – Matthew 27:54
  • He even gives orders to evil Spirits and they obey him – Mark 1:27
  • The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. – Mark 11:18
  • Surely, this man was the Son of God! – Mark 15:39
  • Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” – Luke 5:21

If you doubt the accounts above, ask yourself why?  Do you doubt other accounts in history?  The point is, that the person of Jesus Christ as detailed in The New Testament existed, and the accounts can be trusted as they were written within a generation of the actual accounts (if not a shorter period of time).  I encourage you to read the New Testaments and ask yourself, could these eyewitness accounts of Jesus be trusted?  Be true?
